The Shadow Hero

Are you a fan of graphic novels and comics? Good news! We have many new arrivals in our Young Adult Collection.
Yang, Gene L, Sonny Liew, and Janice Chiang. The Shadow Hero. New York: First Second , 2014. Print.

The Shadow Hero by Gene Luen Yang and Sonny Liew is an especially interesting addition to the collection. It is a new twist on the classic Chinese-American comic, The Green Turtle.

This exciting new series by the author of the New York Times Bestseller, American Born Chinese is receiving rave reviews:

"A golden-age comic superhero returns with a brand-new Asian-American origin story . . . An entertaining and intelligent response to classic superhero stories."  --Kirkus

"The book may not tell Asian-Americans anything they don’t know, but it’s the familiarity and specificity of this story in my hands, in print, in the English language that excite me. Since our ancestors immigrated to this country, these narratives have usually been left to oral history or crudely caricatured in movies like “Breakfast at Tiffany’s.” --Eddie Huang, The New York Times

As you may know, the theme of this year's summer reading program is "Every Hero Has a Story." In a recent npr interview, author Gene Luen Yang explains the importance of reading about superheroes:

"Every superhero has this superhero identity and a civilian identity . A lot of their lives are about code switching. It's about switching from one mode of expectations to another mode of expectations. And I really think that mirrors something in the immigrant's kid's life."

Of course, the summer reading theme goes beyond comic book superheroes; we are celebrating the power of reading and the importance of friendship. Everyone can be a hero, and every hero has a story. What's your story?
