The importance of storytime

Come to Storytime at the East Lyme Public Library. Not only is storytime entertaining, it is also a great way to build your child's early literacy skills. In order to make reading a family activity, we invite parents, grandparents and caregivers to participate. During storytime we read books, sing, dance, play percussion instruments, and end with playtime.

Here are just a few of the many benefits of these activities:
*Reading stories aloud encourages print motivation. Children who enjoy stories are motivated to learn to read.
*Singing develops phonological awareness by helping children hear the words that are made up of smaller sounds.
*Dancing is great exercise and it also develops gross motor skills.
*Playing percussion instruments teaches children rhythm which helps children learn to think spatially.
*Playing with toys with other children encourages oral communication. When children play "unplugged" they are using their imaginations and learning how to interact with people.
*Children who associate the library with fun are more likely to become lifelong library users.

Come to all-ages storytime at the East Lyme Public Library on Mondays and Fridays at 10:00 am.  We also offer Baby Lapsit Storytime programs and programs designed for 2 and 3 year-olds and 4 & 5 year-olds. We even offer bilingual Spanish and Engish storytime on Wednesday nights from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.

What makes hockey such a great subject for children’s books?

It's hockey season! Stop by the East Lyme Public Library to find great books about hockey and other winter sports. To learn more about the connections between hockey and children's literature, read this article from the Association for Library Service to Children.
